Akis Charalambous

Director – Architecture

Akis Charalambous was born in Nicosia in 1944.  He began his studies in Milan in 1963 where he attained the Architects Diploma (Dottore in Architettura). During his studies he worked with the highly acclaimed Architectural Practice ‘Belgiojoso-Peressuti-Rogers’ (BBPR) and once he received his Diploma worked as Professor Belgiojoso’s assistant. There he had the opportunity, as part of a team, to complete many important projects, in an era where a re-evaluation and enhancement of positive modernist values was explored.

In 1972 he returned to Limassol, Cyprus and in 1976 ‘Laghoutis and Charalambous – Architects’ is founded.

In 1991 the Practice is renamed as ‘Akis Charalambous Partnership’

In 2001 the President of the Republic awards the Practice with ‘The National Award for Architecture’.

As the Practice Director and Senior Partner he is often involved in the role of Project Architect in all the important and complex projects that the Practice is involved in. He has attained specialist expertise in the construction of large residential complexes, office developments, exhibition spaces, hotels, tourist complexes, and pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, biochemical laboratories, private clinics and Healthcare centres.

As Project Architect for the Paphos General Hospital he was responsible for the preparation of all drawings and documentation, the review of the Feasibility study, and the supervision and coordination of the Works.

He prepared the design for the creation of the seaside public walkways and parks for the Ayios Tychonas Community Board, that have been completed and the future extensions to the East on the behalf of the Community Boards of Pareklissia and Pyrgos.

He has designed and secured consensus for the renovation and refurbishment of many listed buildings, most of which have been completed.

He has successfully completed, with his Team, projects that required sophisticated maintenance approaches, as well as carrying out engineering interventions to buildings that had been damaged by earthquakes.

Through his involvement in the design of Industrial Workshops and Pharmaceutical Industrial units he has attained a particular expertise in projects that require complex electromechanical installations.
